This professional school offers the Juris Doctor (JD) degree and also allows students to concentrate studies and receive certificates in the areas of Advocacy, Business and Transactional Law, Estate Planning, Family Law, International and Comparative Law, Natural Resources Law, and Tax Law. It also affords students the opportunity to practice law through its Law Clinic, providing legal services to qualified persons under the supervision of practicing lawyersfaculty. Washburn's Externship program allows students to earn credit while experiencing the practice of law in a wide variety of settings tailored to the students' specific interests and need. Four Centers for Excellence complement Washburn's tradition of excellence in teaching. Washburn Law offers students an expanded understanding of different legal systems through a summer-abroad program at the University of the West Indies, in Barbados, and a semester-long program at Maastricht University, in the Netherlands. Washburn Law is recognized as being the home of one of the premier internet sources for legal information and research. The Law School, a leader in legal education, is a co-sponsor of the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning, along with Gonzaga University School of Law.
